Confessions of a Dangerous 39-Year-Old Daily Fantasy Virgin: Gronk’s Time Machine Version

It was Monday Night. The game was coming down to the wire. The Pats needed a touchdown to defeat the Panthers.

Screw that noise. I needed points from Rob Gronkowski.

I think it’s because I have high-end tight ends on my yearly fantasy teams that makes me always lean toward the high-dollar TEs when it comes to daily. In three of my four leagues last week, I had Rob Gronkowski, and in three of my four match ups, I was losing. As the final drive began, I was less than three points from getting into the top half of two 50/50s. On 4th and 10, Tom Brady hit Gronk for a first down. That got me into the money in one of the two 50/50s. In fact, I finished 25th, the last person “in the money” and a solid .98 points ahead of the 26th place finisher. Gronk got a couple of more targets, including the final play of the game, but made no more hay. I finished the week with two wins and two losses. In the second 50/50, I was .83 of a point away from winning $9. Instead I lost $5.

Last week I did one 65k, two 60k, and one 55k. One of the 60k matches was head to head. I lost the 55k and 65k which were 50/50s (I got smoked in the 55k, finishing 42nd out of 50) and I won two of the 60ks.

Here’s my 55k squad:

QB Case Keenum (so many teams got Kubiak’d)
RB: Andre Brown, Danny Woodhead
WR: Andre Johnson, Keenan Allen, Rishard Matthews
TE: Julius Thomas
K/D: Nick Novak, Houston Texans

Out of that entire group, I got two TDs. That’s not a winner. 55ks are tough because you have to go with bargains almost all the way up and down the roster.

The winning h2h 60k squad:

QB: Nick Foles
RB: Andre Ellington (d’oh), Andre Brown
WR: Andre Johnson, Antonio Brown, Cecil Shorts
TE: Rob Gronkowski
K/D: Matt Prater, Jets

Thank you, Foles and Detroit Lions pass D.

My 60k 25th place squad was the same as the H2H. In the future, I’ll probably not have multiple squads with the exact same lineup. If you get a major injury or a Bruce Arians situation, you’re potentially screwed.

65k 27th place finisher:

QB: Drew Brees
RB: LeSean McCoy (I love having extra money), Andre Brown
WR: Andre Johnson, Brown, Shorts
TE: Gronk
K/D: Kai Forbath/Cardinals (wow, goose eggs from a kicker and a D)

This week, I’m going in “heavy” with the 55k squads. I have three very different rosters after considering closer rosters. I’m in three 50/50s, from $1 to $5. In all three, I picked Keenum and his $6100 salary all the way. Did you hear me, Kubiak?
